Expert's guide to choosing the perfect guest fascinator: "It can be worn at both morning and evening weddings, but there's some confusion."

The founders of Mimoki and Marcela & Co, two of the most popular brands among the most stylish guests, provide us with tips for wearing all kinds of headpieces, review 2026 trends in this area, and answer all questions, such as at which events to wear them (and which not to) and with what hairstyle.

In the world of guests, few accessories have the ability to transform a look as much as a good headpiece. However, choosing the right one is not always as simple as it seems: can it be worn at evening weddings? What size and type is correct depending on the time of the event? How does it combine with the dress or hairstyle? Although more and more women are daring to incorporate them into their celebration outfits, many doubts about their use persist. To clarify them, we spoke with two of the experts who best know this accessory: Paula Beneytez, founder of Marcela & Co—, who shares the keys to choosing the right headpiece and reviews the trends that will mark 2026.

At which events can a headpiece be worn and at which is it not recommended?

If we adhere to etiquette recommendations, headpieces have their own rules of use, and no matter how elegant they may be, they are not always appropriate. Paula Beneytez explains it this way: "Wide-brimmed hats and large headpieces are recommended for daytime weddings, horse races, or institutional events (I'm thinking of the women of the British Royal Family and the events they attend representing the institution). Headbands and smaller embellishments can be worn at evening weddings, baptisms, communions... At all other events, such as an evening party or an informal event, it is not advisable to wear a headpiece."

Time matters: wide-brimmed hats for morning, pillbox for afternoon, turbans for evening.

Both experts emphasize the importance of choosing the right type of headpiece depending on the time of the event. Take note:

Wide-brimmed hats and large, winged, or wide-diameter headpieces are reserved exclusively for morning or midday weddings. "They need light, space, and a setting that visually supports them," the expert points out. "A wide-brimmed hat is strictly for morning because it is wide, casts a shadow, takes up space, and has a strong presence." On the other hand, "a structured headpiece is more versatile: if it is voluminous, it is for morning; if it is more compact or short-brimmed, it can perfectly accompany a bride or guest at an afternoon wedding," she comments.

As you can see, as the day progresses, the headpiece gets smaller. That's why fascinators, headbands, bandeaux, or 'pillbox' hats, which are the most viral trend of the season, work perfectly for afternoon weddings. "They are elegant and complete a look while maintaining the gesture of wearing something special on the head without being excessive or inappropriate," she considers.

In the evening, the style becomes even more subdued. Here we should opt for turbans, jewel hair accessories, or very refined pieces that add sophistication without volume, that is, "sophisticated, contemporary pieces that maintain the intention of elevating the look."

What hairstyle to choose when wearing a headpiece?

When we decide to wear a headpiece, one of the most common doubts is what hairstyle to choose. And be careful, not everything goes: "The easiest is a low bun, a ponytail, a braid... although they also work with half-updos," they agree from Marcela & Co. You can also wear your hair down, "but only if the hairstyle is very polished and there are no strands of hair between the headpiece and the veil (if worn) or on the face. The best thing is to look at Kate Middleton, who usually wears her hair down and very long," she exemplifies for us.

Keys to combining a headpiece with your guest dress

Generally, when creating a guest look, we first think about the dress or suit and then add accessories: shoes, handbag, earrings or other jewelry, and also the headpiece. At this point, not only the time of the event comes into play, but also the style of the dress: "In the morning, where the headpiece can have more volume, I recommend dresses with clean lines, looking for volume in the second third, so that the overall look is harmonious. In the afternoon, with smaller pieces like 'pillbox', 'bandeaux' or fascinators, you can play more with the architecture of the dress, with more exaggerated volumes in shoulders, sleeves or skirts."

She clarifies that "wide-brimmed hats always accompany a short or midi cocktail dress or a skirt or pant suit, but never a long dress," while "turbans, jewel hair accessories or very refined pieces that add sophistication without volume are ideal to accompany evening updos and long or formal dresses."

Of course, the color of the headpiece must also be taken into account. Here the key is, "that the color of the headpiece flatters the guest, rather than matching the outfit. In the end, many colors combine with each other, but not so many flatter our face, skin tone, hair..."

When combining it with the look, you can choose to wear a headpiece of the same color as the outfit, but sometimes it is difficult to achieve the exact same shade. Therefore, the experts encourage us to choose pieces "with colors that converse: I am interested in nuances and sophisticated combinations that add depth; the ensemble should feel intentional, not forced."

Tips for stylishly wearing a fascinator (and other guest trends)

As you may have already noticed, this 2026, the big trend in headpieces is fascinators, an accessory with the ability to transform any guest look that, quoting those who know most about fashion, "in its different versions adds strength to the 'outfit', frames the face and is very flattering; when well chosen, it is an elegant, modern and very flattering piece."

If you're considering wearing one, pay attention to the recommendations offered by Mimoki: "The fascinator is a very versatile design as it is ideal for both morning and evening celebrations. It works especially well with dresses with clean lines and flowing fabrics: if the look is very structured, the fascinator can be made with lighter materials; and if the dress is fluid, the fascinator can provide architecture," she advises. "My advice is to pay attention to proportion and inclination. It's not just about placing it: the angle completely changes the expression," she adds. In this regard, the creator of Marcela & Co has her own opinion: "I prefer to place it on the crown, more like Jackie Kennedy than centered like a hat."

However, there is life beyond fascinators this season and other important trends, such as "bulky headbands, large flowers, more sculptural shapes... that is, headpieces that are more central to the styling and less of an accessory," says Paula.

Renting a headpiece, the preferred option for some guests

Marcela & Co offers the possibility of renting headpieces, a very practical service that more and more guests are turning to. If we already rent our outfits for special occasions, why not do the same with accessories? "I would recommend renting to our younger clients: they usually have 8 weddings in a year and like to change their look a lot, and also, their current style will not be the same as in 10 years. However, for our clients over 40, who already have a much more defined style and fewer weddings on their calendar, I would recommend buying pieces in the shades that flatter them most and that they can use on several occasions," Paula Beneytez tells us.
