Protocol for headgear

Protocol for headgear

One of the things you ask us most is about the protocol required for headdresses to be the perfect guest. Here we go:

Time of day to use them

The golden rule is: as the day progresses, the size of the headdress decreases. Thus, in the morning it is perfect to wear a hat, a headdress with a veil, a cap, a tiara…

For an evening wedding, the most appropriate thing is to wear a headband without a veil, an ornament with rhinestones, hairpins or nothing at all and give prominence to the earrings or the rest of the outfit.

Placement

The most intuitive thing is that you have to be comfortable. It can't be uncomfortable for your companion, so place it on the opposite side to where you usually use to hook your companion's arm (if you do). Another option is to place it on the side where you have your hair parted so that it can't be seen.

Materials

Straw, linen, buntal, flowers… for summer; and velvet, wool, feathers… for winter as a general rule, although it depends a lot on the combination with other materials, the colours…

I see this straw hat with a velvet ribbon as perfect for spring, summer, early autumn... even if it has velvet.

This wool cap is clearly for winter:

Just like this headband, which even though it has flowers, I wouldn't wear it in the middle of summer because of the colors, the materials...

I would wear these feathers at any time of the year because of their color:

When to take off your headdress

If it is an evening wedding, when you get home, it will be something small and therefore more comfortable. If it is a morning wedding and you wear a hat, hairnet, headdress... when the dance starts. Never while eating or before eating. For this reason, it is very important that you are very comfortable with your headdress.

Colors

This is no longer a matter of protocol , it is more a matter of taste. Personally, I do not like monochromatic looks, I find them boring. I always advise my clients to combine colors, textures... and look for headdresses that they can reuse, in tones that they are used to seeing. I think they are more stylish, reusable and do not make us go crazy looking for the same tones in different materials, which is often an impossible mission. María León Castillejo, who for me is a reference in the world of fashion, says in her book Dressing with style that "wearing a different color is a very important thing." “Shoes that are the same color or fabric as your bag are too boring”

Hair up or hair down

There is nothing in the protocol for headdresses that says one thing or the other, so go with whatever you like best. I think it's easier to get it right if you wear your hair up, but there are also ideal looks with loose hair and a hat.

In short, go comfortable, at ease with the headdress you choose and enjoy the party.

Have I left out any golden rules? If so, please leave them in the comments and we'll add them.

Happy weekend

Paula
